Part 2

Đề bài

Describe a photograph of you that you like.

You should say:

  • where it was taken
  • when it was taken
  • who took it
  •  and explain why you like it.

Sample

I’m going to talk about an old photo of my brother and me which brings back a lot of good memories. The other day, I was going through my old personal belongings and when I opened a notebook, it fell off. I immediately recognized it.

In the photo, my brother and I were at my grandparents’ house in a rural area in Hue which was in central Vietnam. We stood on the front porch and in front of the main door to the house. It was around Tet holiday so there was calligraphy written on red sheets of paper on both sides of the door. There was nobody else but the two of us in the photo. While my arm wrapped around his shoulders, his arm wrapped around my hip. The reason was that I was a head taller than he was. I vaguely remember my father saying “Smile!” to us before clicking the button on the camera. It was a simple image but it was such a beautiful moment.

I’ve come to treasure this picture since it reminds me of how powerful time can be. More than 15 years have passed since then and my grandparents have passed away so we don’t visit my grandparents’ house as much as we used to do. My brother also has grown into a young man and he’s actually a head taller than I am now. We don’t hang out as frequently as we did in the time of the photo. But perhaps, I should start spending time with him again. Who knows what will happen in the next 15 years?

Part 3

1. Why do people take photos?

There are several reasons why people produce photographs. Most people want to preserve the important memories in their lives such as weddings, birthdays or even funerals of loved ones. I think there are times that we need to be reminded of these precious memories, either to reflect upon our progress in life or to find motivation to keep on trying and make ourselves better.

  • To reflect (v): chiêm nghiệm
  • Precious (adj): quý giá

2. Why is photography important in today’s society?

Well, the obvious answer is that photographs are an important communication tool for our civilisations. In a world where language barriers are yet to be overcome, pictures are the common language that everyone can understand. If you try to explain to a child in Africa what life in Vietnam looks like, they might not be able to grasp the idea. But give them a picture of a busy street in any Vietnam’s city, they immediately acquire some understanding about Vietnam and its culture. I think this is the same idea that photographers and photojournalists try to follow. They try to tell stories to as many people as possible not by words but by photography.

  • civilisation (n): nên văn minh (ở đây dùng như cùng nghĩa với society/societies)
  • language barrier : rào cản ngôn ngữ
  • to grasp (v): nghĩa đen: nắm lấy, nghĩa bóng: hiểu vấn đề
  • to acquire (v): có được
  • photojournalist (n): phóng viên ảnh

3. Do you think paper photos have more value than digital ones? Why?

No, I don’t think so and I’m not talking about the costs that are involved in making different types of photos. Many people think that physical objects like printed photos have more sentimental value because we can touch them, keep them and hand them to others to share. On the other hand, I think that the stories behind each photograph are more important. If a printed photo doesn’t have a story that I could relate to, it is to me a useless piece of paper. On the other hand, when I look at digital versions of famous historical photos, I’m still touched and moved like I’m there in person.

  • physical object: vật thể thực (có thể cầm nắm)
  • sentimental (adj): có tính cảm xúc
  • useless (adj): vô dụng
  • To be touched/moved (expression): cảm động, xúc động

[ACE THE TEST] GIẢI ĐỀ WRITING NGÀY 09/07/2022

Task 1: The charts below give information about different types of waste disposed of in one country in 1960 and 2011.  The graphs show information on various garbage disposal techniques used in a certain nation between 1960 and 2011. Overall, the quantity of paper, food, and other garbage that was disposed of significantly decreased throughout the time period. Contrarily, a greater proportion of plastic, wood, and food was discarded by consumers. An additional point is that the disposal of other things stayed fairly steady. Initially, a quarter of paper was thrown away in 1960, but in 2011 this percentage decreased by 10%. Concerning textiles, this sector likewise had a minor drop of 6% (from 17% to 11%) during the same time period. Additionally, in 2011 people eliminated 3 times less additional waste than the original figure of 13%. Furthermore, it is evident that compared to 2010, the amount of plastic and food waste increased by nearly 10% in 2011. Additionally, consumers d...
