1. Do people in your country like barbecue? 

Absolutely! However, our barbecue technique is different from the one used in the West and we also use rice as a staple food to go with the meat. We have a dish called “cơm tấm”. It is essentially marinated pork rib grilled over charcoal eaten with broken rice and fish sauce.

• marinated (adj): tẩm, ướp (thức ăn)

2. What kind of food do you like to eat for barbecue? 

Besides grilled ribs, I also like barbecued vegetables, especially eggplant. After peeling off the charred skin of the grilled vegetable, you have to pour some fish sauce on top of it and enjoy it with rice. On special occasions, my friends and I also go to fancy Korean restaurants to have Korean barbecue.

3. Would you like to have a barbecue with your family or your friends?

Yes definitely, making barbecue or hotpot is a way to bond with your family and your friends. These foods aren’t too expensive so everyone can chip in a little bit. There are many steps in preparing barbecue so each person can contribute to the cooking process. 

• to bond: làm gắn kết (tình cảm), xây dựng tình cảm
• to chip in (expression): hùn tiền
• to contribute (v) + to: đóng góp vào việc gì đó

4. Did you have barbecue when you were a child?

Yes, I did because my aunty was an avid cook. For many birthday parties and anniversaries in my family, she was in charge of grilling the pork ribs for “cơm tấm”. I used to sit by her side and from time to time she would give me a piece of meat for a “taste test”!
