The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant was first reported to WHO from South Africa on November 24, 2021. Over the past few days, the number of infections has increased significantly, coinciding with the detection of the variant. Since then, at least other 12 countries have confirmed cases of the new strain, with several other reporting suspected cases. Shutters have also been brought down in these countries to contain the new phase of the pandemic. 

This ‘variant of concern’, classified by WHO, carries an unprecedented number of spike mutations, which make it more dangerous and highly contagious. At present, WHO is working with many researchers around the world to better understand Omicron, to make assessments of its transmissibility, severity of infection, symptoms, the performance of vaccines, and the effectiveness of treatments.

The world is being put in a ‘race against time’ on the appearance of such a dangerous variant, said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The overall global risk associated with the newly found Omicron is rated at ‘very high’ and provokes immediate actions. 

The continuous discovery of variants and their rapid spread around the world act as an unpleasant reminder that the pandemic is far from over. Travel bans, if applied correctly, could play a major role in curbing the outbreak of this new wave of COVID-19.
