IELTS Speaking topic Books part 1
Do you have many books at home?
I love to read, so I have depleted a lot of my savings on books. By my bed, I keep a stack of books that I frequently flip through, both fiction and nonfiction. Reading, in my opinion, is crucial for both educating and entertaining the brain.
- To depleted (v): cạn kiệt
- Stack (n): giá, kệ, ngăn xếp
- To flip through (v): xem (sách)
- Crucial (adj): quan trọng
How often do you read books?
It varies. I read a lot when I was younger, but then I became a teen and a lot of distractions came into my life. I found it simpler to concentrate on a YouTube video than a book. But now that I’ve made reading a habit, I do it every day. Any kind of book is a necessity whenever I travel because it can be a fun activity to pass the time while waiting.
- To vary (v): tùy thuộc vào, có thể thay đổi
- Distraction (n): sự xao nhãng
- To concentrate (v): tập trung
- To pass the time (v): giết thời gian
What was your favourite book when you were a child?
Like most children, I loved comic books when I was young. Until today, I can still vividly remember the excitement I felt as I turned the vibrant pages and lost myself in the world of my favourite comic book characters.
- Vividly (adv): một cách rõ ràng
- Vibrant (adj): sôi động, màu sắc
Are your reading habits now different than before?
Yes, since I’ve grown older and become more discriminating about what I should do and what I enjoy doing, my reading habits have changed. As a result, after 20 years, “children’s comedy” or “ghost stories,” which I enjoyed as a child, no longer appeal to me.
- Discriminating (adj): biết suy xét
- To appeal to sb (v): hấp dẫn

Describe your favourite book.
- What kind of book it is
- What it is about
- What sort of people would enjoy it
- And explain why you liked it.
Everybody has a favourite book, and it becomes our favourite book because we do enjoy reading that book to a great extent. Today, I would like to talk about a book that I was really fond of reading when I was a little girl/boy. Its name is “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”. It is a fantasy novel written by British author J. K. Rowling, who has gained enormous popularity worldwide as a result of this amazing series.
The book illustrates the life and adventure of a young wizard, Harry Potter, with his two best friends Ron and Hermione at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry had a formidable foe: the Dark Wizard, Lord Voldemort, who desired immortality and the ability to rule the magical world. Voldemort murdered Harry’s parents when he was still a one-year-old and failed in attempting to kill him, leaving a scar on his forehead in the shape of a lightning bolt.
I remember starting to read this book when I was around 9 years old. I had just started to get better at reading at that time, and Harry Potter was a thick book, so it took me a long time to finish it. Of course, I didn’t fully comprehend the book’s details when I was a young child, but I was very moved by the tale of Harry’s friendship with Ron and Hermione. Additionally, some of my classmates with whom I still maintain contact today, I believe it gave me more confident to make friends with them. And I believe that is the main factor in how much I enjoy this book.
- To a great extent: to lớn
- To be fond of (v): yêu thích
- Enormous (adj): to lớn
- To illustrate (v): minh họa, nói về
- Formidable (adj): ghê gớm, dữ dội
- Foe (n): kẻ thù
- Immortality (n): sự bất tử
- Attempt (v): cố gắng (tước đoạt mạng sống)
- Forehead (n): trán
- To comprehend (v): hiểu
- To maintain (v): giữ gìn
- Factor (n): nhân tố, yếu tố

What kind of books do children like?
I suppose they are fairy tales. This, in my opinion, is due to children’s particular interest in magic or a story with surprising turns. Children can use fairy tales to transport them to a fantastical land, away from the real world. I used to do the same thing when I was younger. I was in love with every little detail when the fairy transformed Cinderella into a beautiful princess wearing a gorgeous gown.
- A surprising turn (n): một ngã rẽ bất ngờ (trong câu trả lời thì nói về một tình huống bất ngờ trong các câu chuyện)
- Fantastical (adj): thần kỳ, nhiệm màu, tuyệt vời
- Away from: rời xa khỏi
- Gorgeous (adj): tuyệt trần, xinh đẹp

What should parents do to encourage their children to read books?
It is necessary that parents encourage their children’s reading activities at an early age. A couple of methods I can think of are: surrounding the children with reading material, choosing a suitable book and read with them as well as showing interest in the children’s reading. Reading gives kids an advantage in school because they are used to being introduced to new ideas and can process them more quickly and effectively.
- A couple of: một vài
- Reading material (n): sách (= books)
Why do adults still have to read books?
I believe this is the case because reading books not only relieves stress, but also enriches the soul and broadens one’s knowledge, and learning is a lifelong process. So, people of all ages should continue to read books.
- To enrich (v): làm giàu thêm
- To broaden (v): mở rộng
- A lifelong process (n): một quá trình cả đời

How do you think reading habits will change in the future?
Because of technological advancements, paper books may become obsolete as digital books take over. Online reading via devices such as laptops, mobile phones, and kindles is now favoured due to their convenience. However, there are still people nowadays who prefer holding a book in their hands while reading rather than an electronic device.
- Technological advancements (n): sự phát triển công nghệ
- Obsolete (adj): lỗi thời
- Kindle (n): một dòng máy đọc sách điện tử
